MUSICAL GREETING FROM REUNION ISLAND

Reunion Island is a French overseas territory, which shares cultural and historical ties with India. The Institut français is thus delighted to celebrate the rich culture of this Indian Ocean island by organising « Musical Greeting from Reunion Island », with the support of the Regional Council of La Réunion, the DAC Indian Ocean, the Departmental Council of La Réunion, and the Institut français. This tour is produced by Le Pôle Régional des Musiques Actuelles de La Réunion, in association with the Alliances françaises network in India and Spic Macay.

This musical tour, conceived during the 3rd edition of Bonjour India, features 4 musical groups: Maya Kamaty, Mounawar, Grèn Sémé and Christine Salem. The artists will perform in cultural and educational venues, before converging to Pondicherry for a 2-day Reunion Island festival.

  • Meet the Artists

Maya Kamaty

Maya Kamaty is the daughter of the renowned lead singer of Ziskakan, Gilbert Pounia. Ziskakan is one of the most well-known groups of Maloya music, which is native music of Reunion Island. Her music is a mix of traditional influences, African beats and modern melodies, with a drop of blues. Her lyrics are mostly in Créole, which is a dialect of the island – a form of broken or pidgin French.

Mounawar

Mounawar has a rich repertoire of the indo-oceanic region, with a lot of Afro beats. His music is therefore mixes crossroads and borders, cultures and feelings. Mounawar’s lyrics are a revolt against humanity’s lack of respect for the fellow man, but also for Mother Earth.

Christine Salem

Christine Salem is a rare feminine voice and a key figure of Maloya music. She’s known for a deep androgynous tone, a beautiful and warm voice which is mostly accompanied by her favourite instrument, the kayanm. Christine sings in Créole, Malagasy, Comorian and Swahili. Her unique style and energy on stage have placed her in the best concerts top 10 ranking of the New York Times.

Grèn Sémé

Grèn Sémé mixes Maloya from its native Reunion Island, with Jacques Brel, Bashung and Noir Désir. Its music is a mix of rock poetry, dub pulsations and other rhythms which give it the most unique quality. It is one of the most original voices of the francophone musical scene.
